How to Break a Bad Habit

Everyone has bad habits, and there isn't anything necessarily wrong with that, unless the habit is not beneficial for you. Breaking a bad habit is a difficult task, but sometimes understanding how they are formed can help a person break them.


There are many theories around breaking bad habits and how they develop, but the main one is the 3 R's:

  1. Reminder

  2. Routine

  3. Reward

With these in mind, here are some useful ways to break a bad habit:

  • Identify your triggers.

  • Focus and remind yourself on why you want to change.

  • Don't do it alone, get support!

  • Find a new, healthy habit to replace the bad one.

  • Prepare for slip ups and remind yourself that it's okay when they occur.

  • Visualize yourself breaking the bad habit

  • Practice self care

  • Leave yourself helpful reminders

  • Believe that YOU CAN break the bad habit!
