The Craze Behind Tik Tok

I’m sure many of you herd or use the app called Tik Tok. For those of you who have been living under a rock, Tik Tok is a social media app where users share videos covering a wide range of categories from lip syncing to comedic skits and viral challenges. By late 2019 Tik Tok reached over 800 million users with 50% of the audience/users under the age of 34. The average time spend on the app is 52 minutes a day, although it is easy to loose sense of time while on the app because of all the possible categories to watch. The variety of content includes education, business, comedy, and music; catering to a variety of people. The algorithm is randomized so it is possible for anyone to go viral, and you can even get paid once you have enough followers.

I admit, I have fallen into the deep dark hole that is Tik Tok, to the point where I had to use my screen time app on my phone to lock me out of the app after two hours. I also admit that I am not only an audience member, but a greater on Tik Tok, using the platform to dance and voice over videos that I think are relatable. Personally, I find it to be a great creative outlet for myself, while others use the app to gain “clout” or to find relationships. During my free time, I enjoy scrolling through the fifteen second videos. It is there I find advice on make up, comedy skits, new dances, and even advertisements for certain products. But because the app is so diverse and can target many different age groups, there is the concern of young kids being found by pedophiles. Personally, I haven’t had an issue with any of that, nor have I herd of anyone running into that issue. If you aren’t on the app yet, I applaud you, but also tell you that you are missing out on some good content. My father is even on it!
