Burn Out- What It Is And How To Treat It

Burn out has a very specific definition- it’s related to chronic workplace stress that hasn’t been successfully managed.

Employee Burnout has five main causes:

  1. Unreasonable time pressure

  2. Lack of communication and support from manager

  3. Lack of role clarity

  4. Unmanageable workload

  5. Unfair treatment

The difference between stress and burnout:

Stress:

  • You feel hyperactive and anxious

  • You put in too much effort

  • You have less energy

  • It takes a physical toll

  • You feel emotions more strongly

Burnout:

  • Your emotions feel blunted

  • You have less motivation

  • It’s hard to put in any effort

Signs of Burnout Include

  • Physical and mental overwhelm and fatigue

  • Moodiness and irritability

  • Loss of motivation

  • Inability to make decisions

  • Hopelessness

  • Sleep deprivation

Burnout tends to come with the overwhelming feeling of exhaustion. This won’t simply go away with a vacation or time off. So, what can you do?

  1. Say no- be strategic about when you say yes to things, and don’t feel bad when the answer “no” is better for your well being.

  2. Practice self care- think about things that make you feel relaxed and happy and do more of it. Take time to develop things that help you decompress and bring joy.

  3. Prioritize relationships- find time to nurture your personal connections, those people are there to support you during difficult times!

  4. Approach the human resources department or talk to a supervisor about the issues you are heaving.

  5. Regularly scheduled breaks from work, along with a daily renewal exercise can help you fight burnout.

And if none of these things work for you, talk to a professional and consider looking for a new job!
