It's been a whirlwind of a year, and I wanted to take some time to share an update on my life, my progress, and some of the exciting (and challenging) moments I've experienced over the past twelve months. Buckle up, because it's been quite a ride!
Finishing the First year of my master's program
I'm thrilled to share that I've successfully completed the first year of my Master's program in Childhood Education for grades 1-6! This accomplishment has been a huge milestone for me. Pursuing higher education has always been a dream, and taking steps towards earning my master's degree feels incredibly gratifying. The coursework has been rigorous, and balancing it with my work commitments has been challenging, but the knowledge and skills I've gained are invaluable.
My First year working in a school
Alongside my studies, I also finished my first year working in a school, which has been an eye-opening and transformative experience. Initially, I started as a teaching assistant in the World Language Department, helping with both French and Spanish classes. I was excited to contribute and learn more about the educational environment. However, things took an unexpected turn when the Spanish teacher left, and I was asked to temporarily fill the position.
Stepping into the role of a teacher
Being thrust into the role of a teacher with very little background and formal training in teaching was a harsh awakening. Suddenly, I found myself responsible for teaching grades pre-k through 8th Spanish, with each grade requiring different lessons and approaches. This meant creating lesson plans, activities, assessments, grading, and communicating with parents- essentially everything that is required of a teacher (and more).
The experience was nothing short of intense. I often felt overwhelmed, trying to juggle the demands of being a full-time teacher while also being a full-time student. There were days when I questioned by decision to switch from a career in marketing to teaching, especially when the workload seemed insurmountable. Yet, amidst the chaos and stress, there were also moments of pure joy and fulfillment. Seeing the students engage with the material, watching their faces light up when they grasped a new concept, and receiving feedback from parents about their children's progress made it all worth it.
Reflecting on the challenges and rewards
The journey hasn't been easy. There were numerous late nights, early mornings, and countless cups of coffee. The transition from marketing to teaching was daunting. Marketing was a field I was comfortable in, with a clear part and predictable challenges. Teaching, on the other hand, presented a new set of challenges everyday. However, despite the difficulties, this year has been incredibly rewarding. I've grown not only as a professional but also as a person.
One of the most significant lessons I've learned is the importance of resilience and adaptability. Teaching multiple grade levels and subjects required me to think on my feet and be flexible in my approach. I've also learned to value the support system around me- colleagues, friends and family who encouraged me when I doubted myself.
Managing Social life and personal time
In terms of my social life, I must admit that it took a backseat this year. My primary focus was on my education and my job, leaving little time for anything else (hence why I haven't posted in so long). While I did hang out with my friends and go out, I also did prioritize myself and my time and don't regret a thing. There will be more opportunities to socialize, but I only have one shot at this journey towards becoming a certified teacher!
Looking Ahead
Now, as I look ahead, I'm both excited and a little anxious about the future. I have one more year to complete before I earn my Master's degree, and if all goes well and I pass my exams, I'll receive my certification to become a teacher. It's a goal that's within reach, and I'm determined to make it happen.
As for work, I'm not entirely sure what the next year holds. Whether I continue as the Spanish teacher or return to a teaching assistant role, I am excited about the possibilities. The experiences and skills I've gained this year have equipped me to handle whatever comes next. More importantly, this year has solidified my passion for teaching. Despite the challenges, I find joy and purpose in educating young minds and helping them grow.
Here's to another year of growth, learning, and new adventures. I can't wait to see what the future holds and to share more updates with you all.
xoxo,
Kate
