Due to the spread of Covid-19 I was sent home from my University in the Spring. I needed a job, so my younger brother agreed to talk to his boss at the supermarket/ petting zoo that him and his girlfriend worked at. I was asked to go in for an interview, only it wasn't really an interview. Instead, I was shown around the store and deli (where I would be stationed), introduced to people, and was asked my availability. That was it. I was given my uniform, trained for one hour, and was soon a working girl.
In the beginning, I really enjoyed working there. I got to know my coworkers, learned the ropes of the deli, and created a schedule to work. But it wasn't long until things went south.
The store was full of people trying to buy as much as they could, some of them having no problem being nasty to us workers. Employees were calling out, so our managers were constantly stressed out, and as a result, we were stretched too thin.
Then came the Covid scare. My father required surgery, but before he could go in, he needed to get tested. His results came back positive, so we immediately quarantined him and went to get tested ourselves. My brother called our boss to inform her of the situation and that we had to be quarantined as well. She claimed to understand, told us she would find us coverage, and in a rude way hung up the phone.
So my family and I waited for our results, and when they came back negative for Covid-19, we were extremely relieved. With our results came a statement that we should still quarantine, and a specific date for when we were done, was given. My brother, took it upon himself to return to work. I did not.
One day, my brother came to me asking I was working that day. I said no, technically I should still be quarantining. He looked confused, apparently without my knowledge, my boss had put me back on the schedule.
I immediately messaged her, explaining that even though I tested negative, I was following the paperwork that told me to continue quarantining (for two weeks). Because my brother was working, she simply would not even TRY to understand what I was saying to her. Eventually, she fired me by simply saying, "Don't come back". I never did.
