Living At Home After College

Updated: May 5, 2022

If I am being honest, moving back home after four years away at college was difficult. Don’t get me wrong, being home is great! I have food, a roof over my head, and parents who love me… but it’s still a big adjustment. When a teenager leaves for college, they come back more of an adult.

In my personal experience, when I was away at school, I had a different kind of freedom versus the freedom at home. When it came to the freedom I had at school, I mean this in a personal sense. I did not have to ask for permission to do things and I was able to create my own schedule. When it comes to the freedom I have it hoe, its in the financial sense. I don’t have to pay rent or for food which definitely helps me save money for my future.

Because of these differences, there have been many of times where my parents and I find ourselves arguing over trivial things. Why is this? The answer is simple. In most cases, the parent struggles to recognize that their child is in fact no longer a kid, but a growing adult and member of society.

It’s safe to say acclimating to home life after being away at school an take time. I’ve been home since August and my parents and I are still adjusting to me being home full time. My biggest advice is to take it one day at a time and to still respect your parents. It will be difficult, but if you act like an adult they will see you as one, and living at home get’s a little bit easier!
