Why I'm Anti-Valentines Day

Updated: May 5, 2022

I want to start off by saying that just because I am anti-Valentine’s Day does not mean I do not believe in love, because I do. For the longest time actually, I loved celebrating Valentine’s Day (but that was probably because I was in relationships during that time). It wasn’t until I was in my last two relationships did my views on the holiday change.

Valentine’s Day can put pressure on a relationship. The holiday materializes the real meaning of love (you can thank marketing and advertising companies for that one). It wasn’t until I actually started taking marketing classes did I realize how the business industry greatly impacted people’s views on love and how it should be celebrated specifically one day a year.

It can also be an incredibly expensive holiday; buying nice jewelry, going out to eat, and buying flowers may not help the relationship and can in fact harm it. A lot of planning goes into the “wonderful” holiday. If you want to go out to eat on that busy day, it requires quite a lot of planning. Going out and buying an expensive gift can empty people’s pockets, and flowers simply just die. Now don’t get me wrong, it’s nice going out and receiving nice gifts. But let me ask you this…if you were in a normal and healthy relationship, then shouldn’t this be happening normally? Shouldn’t it always feel like Valentine’s Day?

Lastly, Valentine’s Day singles out people who are not in a relationship and leaves everyone with unreasonable expectations. From my personal experience, spending Valentine’s Day single and alone is absolutely miserable. It’s on Valentine’s Day and night I make it a point to stay off social media and away from any romance shows or movies. There’s something about being surrounded by, and smothered by, love that makes me just want to cry and vomit at the same time.

So how do I celebrate Valentine’s Day? If I am in a relationship I just spend one on one time with that person. I don’t expect a fancy and expensive gift or to be taken out to eat. Instead I prefer quality time with my significant other. However, if I am not in a relationship, I don’t celebrate the holiday. IF ANYTHING, I spend the night with my other single friends watching movies and eating our weight in candies and chocolate.

Of course, to all the love birds out there, I’m happy for you and I hope you have an amazing day and lovely evening this Valentine’s Day. Sending much love!
