There's a growing interest in using sounds such as music and white noise to reduce environmental noise and help you sleep. The best sound to fall asleep to depends on your personal preference, your sleep environment, and the nature of your sleep problems.
Personally, I can't fall asleep when it is completely silent. Now, I fall asleep with either the TV on or a playlist containing thunderstorm noises. Of course, it took a lot of experimentation to find what works for me. Here are some other options that might work for you:
Music
Some studies have found that music may decrease the time it takes to fall asleep. The best music for sleep may depend on personal preference, but I've linked a music playlist for sleep that I enjoy here.
Nature Sounds
Research suggests that listening to nature sounds may help induce relaxation for people who have trouble winding down for bed, reduce nighttime awakenings, and improve sleep quality. A nature sounds playlist can be found here.
White Noise
Research shows that continuous white noise can be useful for masking the effects of noisy interruptions such as doors slamming or cars honking, so the sleeper is less likely to wake up. A playlist for white noise can be found here.
Pink Noise
Preliminary research suggests that playing pink noise during sleep can optimize brain waves to improve sleep quality. A playlist for pink noise can be found here.
